HOW CAN YOU PREVENT JET LAG?

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT JET LAG?

If you are planning a trip far away, you have a risk of jet lag on your outward or return journey. The result: you're a bit of a zombie on the first days of your holiday ... Or you start the working week at home again feeling very tired. Is there no way to avoid jet lag? Of course there is, with these tips you can reduce the impact of long flights on your body.

JET LAG IS THE CONSEQUENCE OF LONG FLIGHTS

If you fly to another continent, you cross different time zones. Your body's not used to that. So your biological clock and sleep rhythm are confused. As a result, you suffer from fatigue, indigestion, difficulty concentrating, dizziness...

If you fly east, it'll bother you on the way there. On a trip to the west (North or South America) you will only feel the jet lag when you get home.

ADJUST YOUR SLEEP RHYTHM

The best way to prevent jet lag is to adjust your sleep rhythm beforehand. If you travel east, go to sleep a little earlier in the days before departure. Of course, the reverse is true for travelling to America: crawl under your down just a little later. That way, you will feel less time difference for your body.

DEALING WITH JET LAG DURING THE JOURNEY

If you have a choice, opt for a night flight. Then you're more likely to sleep on the plane. You'll arrive at your destination in the morning or afternoon. It's easier to adapt. Important: do not immediately go to sleep on arrival at your hotel if it is not yet sleeping time in the country where you are. It would only make your jet lag worse.

By the way, try to spend your holiday outdoors as much as possible. The natural light affects your melatonin production. Melatonin is precisely the substance that determines your sleep and waking rhythm. This is how you give your body a kind of reset.

DIURNAL RHYTHM OF FOREIGN CULTURE

Immersing yourself in foreign cultures includes the day and night rhythm. Do they get up with the sun? Do they eat sooner or later than we do here? Do that too.

In warm countries, for example, they usually take a break during the day. They also often eat in the evening much later than we are used to in our colder climates. That does have its usefulness.

If you want to make things easier for your body, it's best to follow their rhythm right away. Maybe after a while you will want to sleep at the same time. Another mental trick to reduce the risk and impact of jet lag: set your watch to the time of your destination the moment you get on the plane.
