Down duvets are usually stitched with cassettes or channels. Cassettes are most frequently used with heavy down because they stop the down from moving about too much. Unfortunately, because the down is always held in place, you can’t shake it to air it effectively, so you’ll have to wash it more frequently. Channels are only suitable for light down. The filling stays well distributed, but must be shaken up daily. The advantage of an airing like this is that the down duvet loses any moisture that would otherwise be trapped. As such, it doesn’t need to be washed as frequently.
The shell of your down duvet is almost as important as the filling. A synthetic shell will soon feel clammy because it doesn’t absorb moisture as well. Fine woven cotton is a fine choice because it doesn’t allow down through it, but does allow the movement of air for optimal ventilation. The quality of cotton is measured in newton metres – ‘Nm’: the number of threads for a weight of 1 gram. The higher the Nm value, the better.
We advise you to have your down duvet washed and laundered every seven years. This extends its life and ensures you’re sleeping in hygienic conditions. You cannot wash a down duvet yourself; doing so only cleans the outside. Furthermore, regular washing machines are not designed for working with such enormous volumes. Chemical cleaning, such as dry cleaning, is not an option, because it will damage the natural protective layer of the down.
There’s no room for misunderstandings when it comes to down duvets. Down is assessed against European standard EN 12934 to give consumers reliable guidance and knowledge. It informs you about the composition of the down and gives you insight into the origins, colour and ratio of down to feather. There is also the class. The highest class (Class 1) is only awarded to down duvets with a composition of at least 90 per cent genuine goose or duck down. Fja-Oeyen was there present for the development of this standard. It goes without saying that our down duvets belong to Class 1.
